queries from voters using artificial intelligence Steve, his website’s chatbot. He is a candidate for independent. When asked for a comment, Endacott remained silent.

On his website, people could voice their thoughts and contribute to the creation of policy via the ChatGPT chatbot. In the event that a voter posed a query on AI Steve’s policies and the tool was unable to provide an answer, it would search for potential policies and produce a recommendation. (His website is still up and running, but ChatGPT is no longer used to power the tool.)

“The term gimmick is appropriate.”
Despite the fact that AI chatbots are becoming more intelligent, several experts warned CNN that technology should never replace

for human discretion when managing any aspect of the government.

Professor Jen Golbeck of the University of Maryland’s College of Information Sciences stated, “AI should never be used to make automated decisions, both now and in the future.”

“AI is not set up to make decisions on its own; rather, it has always been intended to support human decision-making by providing some data.”

The rise of AI candidates for office coincides with an increasing awareness of the potential effects of disinformation on elections. For instance, earlier this year, a phony tape of a candidate in

Go viral was Slovakia’s claim that he rigged the election.

Golbeck did concede, though, that AI might have a role in politics if it could assist with a variety of duties, such as responding to constituent forms or offering advice on how to resolve issues.

“With all the knowledge found in an office, you might be able to train a chatbot,” the speaker stated. “However, humans should always make the final decision.”

George Washington University assistant professor of media and public affairs David Karpf concurred, pointing out that those supporting an AI candidacy are embracing “a cultural moment” and shouldn’t be taken seriously.
