Evans Amankwaa, a lawyer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has revealed that he spent more than GH1 million on his unsuccessful campaign to lead the NDC’s Ashanti Region.

He claimed that on election day alone, he had given each of the 1,400 delegates more than GH460,600. He claimed to have spent GH350 ($GH500,000)—roughly similar to GH350—for lunch and transportation for each delegate on election day in an interview with Kumasi-based Akoma FM.

Interestingly, when questioned if he regretted spending so much money on the race that he ultimately lost, Amankwaa replied that he wasn’t intended to win at any costs.

He said he was sure he was going to win the election, “The outcomes from yesterday didn’t surprise me. I invested a sizable sum of money on the recently held elections knowing that anything may have happened, but it was my choice, so I will never look back on it.”

The main opposition NDC held regional executive elections, and the Ashanti region took part.

At the Baba Yara Sports Stadium on Sunday, November 13, more than 1,400 representatives from the region’s 47 constituencies convened to elect its leaders.
